Kristi Meier, Principal, CPA and CA
Originally from Campbell River, Kristi Meier had her heart set on being a vet since day one. But in her early teens, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, dashing her dreams of entering veterinary medicine.
The silver lining was that this led her to her accounting.
With over 23 years of experience with Presley & Partners – and as the firm’s resident estate tax expert – Kristi was driven to use her skills to benefit animals by volunteering on the board of Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS). For more than a decade, she acted as the wildlife rescue organization’s treasurer.
“Working with MARS united my passion for helping animals with my love of numbers,” says Kristi. “But eventually it came time for me to move forward with supporting a new initiative – helping those who are homeless and at-risk in the Comox Valley.”
35,000+ Canadians are homeless on any given night
Kristi has spent the last five years as Director with Dawn to Dawn, a registered non-profit that helps to provide transitional housing to those in need in the Comox Valley.
“So many people are only a paycheque away from couch surfing, it’s frightening. We’re not just talking about your classic ‘at-risk’ individuals here,” Kristi says. “Students, families, the elderly… anyone could end up in this boat, and it’s tremendously difficult to restart if you don’t have a physical address or a place to call home. That’s where Dawn to Dawn comes in.”
For the last three years, she has also been the proud captain of the Presley & Partners team in the Coldest Night of the Year event – a fundraising initiative in which participants walk to end homelessness in Canada and experience a taste of what it’s like to live on the streets.
It takes a village
Dawn to Dawn also offers vibrant community recreation programs from book clubs to a successful street soccer team that has traveled globally to compete in tournaments.
There are countless ways to get involved, she says.
“Showing support goes beyond food, shelter and security,” Kristi explains. “Studies have shown that getting homeless and at-risk individuals socially integrated and invested in community can make all the difference. These are people, just like you and I, who share our need to belong – they’re not outsiders, they’re just human beings who need a helping hand. Can you help lend one?”
